Wanaka - something for everyoneWanaka township on the edge of Lake Wanaka is situated at the gateway to the Mt Aspiring National Park – a world heritage area. Wanaka has something for everyone, from the cafe sitting visitor to the active outdoor recreationalist. In summer time the focus is on recreating outside and often involves the lake or the Clutha river which drains Lake Wanaka to the east. Swimming, wake boarding, fishing sailing, jet boating and canyoning are popular activities. For the keen walker there are many tracks close to town as well as the tracks that give access to the higher mountains of Mt Aspiring National Park. Spectacular views can be had on the Mt Roy climb or the Rob Roy Glacier walk on the edge of the National Park. Information about tracks can be got from the Dept of Conservation Visitor Centre Wanaka has it's own Rippon Vineyard close to town and it is short drive to the award winning vineyards of the Bannockburn region. Ski Lake WanakaIn winter time Wanaka is centrally situated to suit the downhill skier, snow boarder or cross-country skier: Queenstown is less than an hours drive from Wanaka and can be driven either via the spectacular Crown Range Highway or by the equally spectacular Kawarau Gorge route.
